Developing Life Skills: Building Independence Through the NDIS

Empowering Participants in Western Sydney to Live Confidently and Independently
One of the most powerful goals of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is helping people with disabilities build the skills they need for everyday life. Whether it’s learning how to cook, manage money, travel independently, or build relationships, developing life skills is key to gaining confidence and independence.
At Starlight Care, we work with NDIS participants across Mount Druitt, Norwest, Campbelltown, and Penrith to create tailored support plans that promote real-world learning, personal growth, and long-term empowerment.
What Are Life Skills?
Life skills are the essential abilities that help people manage daily activities, make informed decisions, and navigate the world around them. Under the NDIS, developing life skills falls under Capacity Building support categories and can include:
- Personal hygiene and self-care
- Meal preparation and healthy eating
- Budgeting and money handling
- Household chores and organisation
- Public transport training
- Time management and routines
- Social skills and communication
- Problem-solving and decision-making
Why Are Life Skills Important?
For many NDIS participants, mastering life skills means:
✔️ Living more independently
✔️ Reducing reliance on carers or family
✔️ Increasing self-confidence
✔️ Participating more actively in the community
✔️ Making informed choices about one’s own future
This is especially important for young adults transitioning to adulthood, or individuals moving into Supported Independent Living (SIL) environments.
“With the right support, learning these skills becomes not just possible—but empowering.”

How Starlight Care Supports Life Skill Development
At Starlight Care, our trained support workers and mentors deliver individualised life skill programs that are tailored to each participant’s goals, ability level, and daily routine.
Practical Training at Home or in the Community
We support participants in real-world settings—at home, in the community, or even in group-based settings—so skills are learned in ways that feel natural and relevant.
Person-Centred Goal Setting
We work with participants and their families to define clear, measurable goals that promote growth and independence over time.
Focus on Building Confidence
We celebrate progress at every stage, no matter how big or small, helping participants feel empowered and proud of their achievements.
Who Can Benefit?
Life skill support is ideal for:
- Young adults with disability preparing to live independently
- Participants transitioning from school to work or group homes
- Individuals with intellectual, psychosocial, or physical disabilities
- Anyone seeking to develop day-to-day confidence in home, work, or social life
Our programs are available through NDIS Capacity Building funding and can be included in your plan with the help of your Support Coordinator.
Real Impact: A Client Story
“Before I started with Starlight Care, I struggled with basic things like cooking or going to the shop. Now, I prepare my own meals, clean my space, and even help plan our weekly shopping list. I feel proud of myself every day.”
– Sarah, NDIS Participant from Campbelltown
